Poll Shows Public Doesn't Support Balancing State Ed Budget On Cuts Alone

On Friday, we met with a local representative. In my comments, I referred to this poll. The representatives comments were:

"My constituents do not want a tax increase."

and

"If you want a tax increase, circulate the petitions to get on the ballot."

This strikes me as the "double dog dare you" approach to legislating. Kind of "double dog dare you to stick your tongue on that frozen playground pole."

It is very discouraging to me that no group is coming forward and willing to compromise for the benefit of the whole, for the benefit of Michigan and its future.

There are very difficult and complex problems that Michigan faces. I know there are no easy answers. But, union and other school employee intransigence on health care or other reforms are not helping. The anti-tax crowd's intransigence to budge an inch is not helping. Administrators and other current employees unwillingness to admit that admin and support costs in Michigan are higher than national averages and need to be reduced does not help.

In 1961 an American said:

"Ask not what your country will do for you. Ask what you can do for your country."

In my humble opinion, THIS generation needs to sacrifice and compromise so that the NEXT generation does not suffer and so that the PRIOR generation of retirees of modest retirement means does not suffer.

My two cents.

Rob,

I share your frustration. What is clear is that our "legislative leaders" refuse to lead. They have NO solutions and seem to spend most of their time trying to push the tough decisions to someone else.

Another thought crosses my mind on this. Michigan has a long history of union activism. Perhaps one reason for this is the thinking of our unenlightened business leaders who seem to be incapable of moving to the political center. For them everything is a money grab.

God help us.
