Redirect attention to long-term fixes for education funding

The budget countdown for the state has triggered a race toward short-term solutions. Public school officials know this isn't the answer for K-12 education. To help others understand this, we can:
  1. Using whatever budget you adopted, calculate where a $240 per pupil puts you for 2009-10. Then, using the Senate Fiscal Agency's own numbers calculate where a $300/pupil reduction puts your district in 2010-11 (As some of you know, this funding level is predicated on a 3%+ growth rate that is in serious question) That said, then calculate where a $500 per pupil reduction puts your district in 2010-11.
  2. The point of all this is that the entire system of funding schools has failed. Enacting a short-term fix merely postpones our demise one more year, maybe. Attention must be redirected to long-term fixes.
  3. Contact your local media and tell this story.
