Just as a reminder, not all states fund education in the same manner as Michigan. An article in today's South Bend Tribune indicates that text book rental fees for elementary students are on average $100 - $120 per year. Several northern Indiana School Corporations (yes, they call them corporations instead of districts in Indiana) have payment plans to assist families with the cost of the books.
Now, I am not advocating for text book rental fees to solve Michigan's financial woes. But I would bet that some of our more creative business managers out there are thinking about including paid advertisements on the inside cover of the books, or something like that, to raise money.
Makes you wonder. Are we as a state looking at the good (and the bad) ways that other states fund schools to see if there is a fairer, more stable, or more cost effective manner (or all of the above)?
